REAL BARCOAL HEAT. PACKED DOWN TO FIT WHATEVER YOU CAMP OUT OF.
The HOWL R3 Campfire is built for three-season camping when the forecast is anybody’s guess.
It makes BarCoal radiant heat small enough to live permanently in your truck, van, camper, or DECKED drawer. Fold the legs and it's smaller than a case of longnecks – about half the packed volume of the R4.
This is the middle HOWL: serious heat without stepping all the way up in size or price.
The U-Tube BarCoal rips at 1,100ºF, throwing radiant heat just like wood coals, but without smoke, embers, or ash.
The A-Flame gives you fully-exposed flames, that leap taller with less fuel. One knob runs both burners, so setup is simple: unfold the legs, hook up the tank, light it, and settle in.
The R3 stays lit in wild winds, monsoon rains, whiteout blizzards, and any altitude on earth. It’s UL certified for safety and built for Stage I and Stage II burn bans, wherever gas fires are allowed. Just check your local regs.

Yep. The R3 is so small you'll actually bring the thing. It fits in DECKED drawers, van garages, camper cubbies, trailer boxes, gear lockers, or whatever corner of your rig still has a little air pocket.
How light is it?
20 pounds. Light enough to carry in one hand. Heavy enough to take a beating.
How big is it?
Smaller than a case of longnecks. It's 18 x 12 x 5.8 inches with the legs folded in, or half the packed volume of the R4.
Does it have folding legs?
You bet your BTUs it does. The R3’s GullWing legs flip out for a steady stance at camp, then fold into the frame so the whole fire pit packs down flat and tight.
The BarCoal’s air intake is completely concealed, so the system is unaffected by 120 mph winds.
The A-Flame windscreen protects the base of the flame from gusts. And if the flame does blow out, it relights itself from the BarCoal’s hot exhaust.
Does it make you warm in wind?
Up to 35 mph, yep. Above that, the R3 keeps burning, but you'll probably want a jacket.
How does it work at altitude?
Perfectly. The R3 keep cranking at any altitude on earth. Air density changes with altitude, but the momentum of the BarCoal fuel jet draws in the correct number of air molecules regardless of air density.
You get clean, complete combustion from Death Valley to Pikes Peak.
What if it rains or snows?
No sweat. The BarCoal and A-Flame burners are self-draining. Even after days of precipitation, they light right up and make you warm. If you get a surprise foot of snow overnight, brush off the HOWL and fire it up.
Because they only make flames. Flames make hot air, which rises and blows away, leaving you cold.
What makes a wood fire warm?
Coals. Wood coals throw radiant heat. Your body absorbs that radiant energy directly, which is why a good coal bed makes you warm even when it's windy and the air is cold.
How does BarCoal keep you warm?
The steel U-tube hits 1,100ºF and shoots out infrared rays with the same frequencies as wood coals. As your body absorbs those rays over time, your molecules vibrate faster and faster, making you warm.
Does more BTUs mean more heat?
Nah. A BTU rating just tells you how much propane the thing burns. It says nothing about how much heat reaches your body. On max, the R3 uses 64,750 BTUs of fuel per hour. But the real story is the BarCoal turning that fuel into 1,100ºF of radiant heat you can feel.

Customer Reviews
Overall rating: 4.9 / 5 from 64 reviews.
I love the R3. I had the R4 but it was a bit too big for my van and it was also too heavy. The R4 is amazing and so is the R3. Build quality and function are top notch. The only reason it gets 4 stars is that it will give off a whistle at times when in use. It’s a bit of annoying sound and I can’t figure out if it’s caused by the wind or by the unit itself
Store owner replied:
Hey Aaron! We're pumped you like the R3! The whistle can be annoying - it's basically the BarCoal system letting you know it needs more fuel. Make sure to always light the unit with all knobs fully in the "ON" position and you should be all set. Our Customer service team will reach out to you with lighting/operating instructions shortly. Thanks so much for your support, means the world to us!
Ordered the R3 on launch day. After it arrived, had second thoughts about whether the R4 would be a better fit. Howl said do a test burn at home to see how it works. But analysis paralysis set it so went to Basil’s Garage where they let me compare them side by side. We were deciding between the adjustability of the R4 and potential for more scenarios of colder, warmer, stargazing, morning, nighttime, etc. while being able to save some fuel in many of those. But, the reality is it is a good bit more bulky and while it could fit, it would be overkill in size, max heat, and adjustability most of the time. Even if price is not an issue, the practicality leans toward the R3. The R3 gives off a ton of heat on its own that seems like 80-90% of the R4. The R3 also seems to give better heat off the exhaust end than the R4. We may be filling fuel more with the R3 but don’t anticipate running out before being in range of a place to fill.
Really appreciate Howl for giving us the go ahead to do a test burn at home with the R3 and for Basil’s for being awesome and letting us test out their floor displays side by side. In the end, we think the R3 is going to be the best fit and will probably be for most owners as well. Stoked for the next trip.
From the moment you open the box, you can tell that this product is a different level of quality of most others. The fit and finish are amazing and it looks like a work of art. The heat that comes from this unit is ridiculously hot which helps with propane management. My old fire box had to be in high the whole time for it to get enough heat to those around it, but even then, it wasn’t enough.
This product is expensive, but you get what you pay for. I truly feel like this is the last propane fire I will buy. Highly recommend!!! .
I love it SO MUCH. It was a splurge for sure, but feels like it was worth every penny. It’s built like a tank, portable, easy to pack in the 4runner and puts out heat like a wood fire without the smoke in your eyes. Burn ban or no- this is my go to camp fire from now on. Can’t recommend it enough 😍
After owning the howl R1 for almost a year my wife and I found ourselves hoping for this exact product to be released. The R3 is truly the Goldilocks product and we are beyond thrilled. Both of our howl campfires are of fantastic build quality and always the star of the show at any outing!
This is everything I wanted from Howl. Truly the best of both worlds. The heat blows away the fire can style pit I was using in the past. It’s durable, beautiful, and exceptionally executed. Look no further, the R3 really howls.
We recently bought mountain property in Northern Colorado. Because of fire restrictions we can still enjoy an awesome fire! We love the Howl R1 and recently upgraded to the R3! It’s amazing! The radiant heat is a game changer! Most fire pits provide little to no heat but not the Howl! If you want the best fire pits invest in a Howl. You won’t regret it!
I have the R1 but this R3 is the perfect hybrid of the R1 and R4. It's not that much bigger compared to the R1 but having the barcoal is a game changer. I tested it out in the mountains in about 50 degree weather and it was perfect for that. Kept me warm and I loved that you could feel constant heat from the barcoal instead of only getting heat from the flame when it blows towards you.
A great addition to the R1. This thing cranks out some serious heat. The foot print is much more desirable than the R4. Bring on the chilly nights and morningss
Happy owner of the R1. Had to purchase the r3 and couldn’t be more happy with the performance. My buddy has a R4 and that’s just a little too much for me in California. Great products!!! Happy and loyal customer.! Thank you Howl!!!
Used this every night on a family trip to Bend. It was sad that we were surrounded with wildfires in all directions, but this gave us a safe way to enjoy a campfire together. A standard 20lb tank gave us 5 nights of fuel, running a few hours each!
I love having the portability of the R3 and the radiate heat is incredible. My feet feel warm just like I am sitting at a camp fire (minus the smoke from wet wood!) Plus it's built like a tank. Fantastic design and the build quality is outstanding.
Great propane campfire. It would earn 5 stars if it had separate control for flames and coal bar like the R4. Wonderful job nonetheless.
Thanks HOWL! AROOO!
We officially have all three, and we love every single one of them!
Living in the PNW, where fire bans seem to show up right when camping season gets good, these have been an absolute game changer. Traditional propane fire pits are nice... but let's be honest—they've never really put out enough heat to replace a real campfire.
We used the newest one this weekend with friends, and wow... it was seriously impressive. It kept everyone warm enough that we completely forgot we weren't sitting around a wood fire. Cozy conversations, happy campers, and no one fighting over the "warm spot." That's a win in our book!
This is a great addition to the line up. It’s more portable and lighter than the R4 but still puts out great heat. It would be perfect if it had a separate valve so heat and flame could be independently controlled. Solid build and does well when there is a breeze. It’s as described, a good three season fire pit.
I’ve been extremely happy with our R3. I’ve used it on a recent camping trip at 10500 ft, and it kept a group of us nice and warm in the night. We never had to turn it up past halfway. Gives a really nice glow and some really good heat. The propane lasts longer than I thought it would which is a nice bonus. No lava rocks to store either. Just plug the quick release in and light it. I would highly recommend one!
I would have liked the opportunity to purchase the bag at the same time even if it would a back order. Paying shipping twice and not even having the option to purchase together was the only disappointment. We strive to support small businesses and innovation.
